Solar Panel Cleaning

Solar panels are self-cleaning in theory and filthy in practice. Rain alone leaves a film of traffic grime, pollen, farm dust and salt at the bottom edge of every panel, and bird droppings, moss and lichen shade individual cells outright. Soiling typically costs a UK array between 5 and 20 per cent of its output, and a single shaded cell can pull down a whole string. We clean domestic roofs, commercial rooftop arrays, ground mounts and solar farms with deionised water and no detergents, so the glass is left genuinely clear rather than smeared.

  • Pre-clean check of the array, frames, fixings and visible cabling, with photos
  • Pure deionised water through a carbon-fibre reach pole, so panels dry spot-free with no detergent residue
  • Soft brush heads chosen for the panel type, protecting anti-reflective coatings and never scouring the glass
  • Bird droppings, moss, lichen and algae lifted from the glass, frames and the shaded bottom edge of each panel
  • Frames and gaps cleared of moss and debris so water drains instead of pooling

Our process

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    Survey

Tell us the panel count, roof type and storey height, or send a photo. We confirm access, water supply and the right pole or platform.

  2. 2

    Set up

We work from the ground wherever possible with a pole-fed pure water system, so nobody walks on your roof or your array.

  3. 3

    Clean

Each panel is brushed and rinsed with deionised water, including the soiled lower edge and the frames, then left to dry without spotting.

  4. 4

    Report

You get before and after photos and a short condition note, so you can watch your generation figures recover.

Questions

Solar Panel Cleaning FAQs

How often should solar panels be cleaned?
Once or twice a year suits most UK properties. Arrays near trees, farmland, building sites, busy roads or the coast, and shallow-pitch or flat roofs that hold dirt, do better on a twice-yearly visit.
Will cleaning really increase my output?
On a visibly soiled array, yes, and noticeably. Independent studies put typical soiling losses between 5 and 20 per cent, and droppings or lichen that shade whole cells cost more again. We photograph the array before and after so you can compare it with your generation readings.
Why deionised water instead of detergent?
Deionised water has had its minerals stripped out, so it lifts dirt and then dries without leaving the spots, streaks or soapy film that attract more dirt. Detergents and jet washers can damage anti-reflective coatings and force water past panel seals, so we use neither.
Do you need to get on the roof?
Usually not. Reach poles clean most domestic and commercial arrays from the ground. Where an array genuinely cannot be reached, we quote for a tower or platform and work to the relevant height safety rules.
Can you clean a solar farm or a large commercial array?
Yes. We price larger arrays per panel or per kWp, work around your generation hours, and can schedule recurring visits with a condition report after each one.
